                Eleven Week Natural Childbirth Course

Julie Olson's Natural Childbirth Course is a full scope class for expectant couples . The foundation of the course rests in partner-supported childbirth and informed decision-making while emphasizing the natural process of giving birth. The 11 week series covers a variety of topics, including birth preparation, nutrition and exercise in pregnancy, handling unexpected situations, breastfeeding, and the post-partum experience. Mothers and their partners learn how to work together to create a harmonious team. They learn skills for communicating their preferences, making informed decisions, minimizing discomfort, and encouraging relaxation in labor. Partners learn to identify and respond to the mother’s needs, tools to help maintain a relaxing environment and they are empowered to respond to any variation in labor. Julie's course incorporates the latest research, modern videos and a sense of humor to make the experience fun and memorable. The course fee of $350 includes materials and a follow-up gathering for the class to show-off their babies and tell their birth stories. Couples should enroll in the course beginning between the 20th and 30th weeks of pregnancy. (For those slightly later in pregnancy, contact Julie to discuss your options.)

Class 1 – Natural Birth Preparation
This class introduces concepts for natural childbirth, explores choices, beliefs and priorities for birth and identifies steps couples can take to enhance the likelihood of achieving a natural birth.  We end the class by exploring the mind-body connection and practicing a relaxation technique.

                Class 2 – Prenatal Wellness
We review nutrition during pregnancy and how nutrition can impact the birth experience.  We discuss comfort in pregnancy and specific exercises that can be beneficial for pregnancy and birth.  We discuss the role of the birth partner for pregnancy and birth.  Couples will explore their typical responses to stress and their preferences for relaxation, coping, and calming the mind and body.

Class 3 - First Stage Labor
Class begins by identifying the many changes a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy and in preparation for labor. We discuss the physical and emotional changes in the first stage of labor, when to travel to your birth place or call your care provider, and the normal variations in the length of labor.  At the end of class mothers work on tuning into their own, unique breathing preferences and practice calming the body with the breath.

Class 4 - Second and Third Stage Labor
We discuss the physical and emotional changes in second and third stage labor.  Basic pushing strategies and second stage positions are covered. Third stage care practices are discussed.

Class 5 - Choices for Birth
We watch the Organic Birth film and discuss the benefits and drawbacks for many of the choices couples have when planning for their birth. Topics include locations for birth, type of care provider, various pain medications, and newborn procedures.   Couples can use this information in preparing a “birth plan”.  Couples practice visualizing their ideal birth experience.

Class 6 - Birth Plans and Common Interventions
We review birth choices and explore ways to work with the chosen health care team to communicate preferences for birth. We identify preference topics, evaluate feelings and listing priorities for birth.  We discuss meeting with the medical team to discuss preferences in a positive way.

Class 7 - Fetal Positioning and Labor Positions
We discuss techniques to identify, improve or maintain your baby’s position in pregnancy to facilitate an easier birth.  We practice positions and techniques to use during labor to ease discomfort and encourage fetal descent.

Class 8 - Variations and Complications
This class covers variations during pregnancy and labor, including a lengthy discussion on induction of labor, premature rupture of membranes, long and slow labors.  We discuss how to avoid variations, if possible, your options if they do occur, and how to have a positive experience if medical interventions become necessary.

                Class 9 - Postpartum Challenges
We discuss postpartum care for new mothers and the challenges new parents face after birth.   We continue to practice relaxation techniques for labor.

                Class 10 - Newborn Information & Breastfeeding
This class begins with a discussion of newborn characteristics, followed by a review of newborn procedures and the basics of newborn care.  We discuss breastfeeding, including positions, how to tell if baby is getting enough milk and where to go if you need help after the baby is born.

Class 11 – Fears and Emotions Surrounding Birth
In the last of our weekly classes, we review labor and comfort options to ensure that couples fully understand the process and are prepared to handle the typical course of labor.  We also discuss fears and emotional relaxation.
