Six Week Condensed Natural Childbirth Course

Julie Olson's Condensed Natural Childbirth Course is for expectant parents who need to complete a childbirth course in a quicker time frame (6 weeks). Compared with the traditional 11 week course, there are longer class times and additional homework assignments in this course.  The foundation of the course rests in partner-supported childbirth and informed decision-making while emphasizing the natural process of giving birth. The 6 week series covers a variety of topics, including birth preparation, healthy pregnancy, handling unexpected situations, breastfeeding, and the post-partum experience. Mothers and their partners learn how to work together to create a harmonious team. They learn skills for communicating their preferences, making informed decisions, minimizing discomfort, and encouraging relaxation in labor. Partners learn to identify and respond to the mother’s needs, tools to help maintain a relaxing environment and they are empowered to respond to any variation in labor. Julie's course incorporates the latest research, modern videos and a sense of humor, to make the experience fun and memorable. The course fee of $290 includes materials.   Couples should enroll in the course beginning between the 28th and 34th weeks of pregnancy. (For those slightly earlier or later in pregnancy, contact Julie to discuss your options.)

Class 1 – Natural Birth Preparation
This class introduces concepts for natural childbirth, explores choices, beliefs and priorities for birth and identifies steps couples can take stay healthy and low risk during pregnancy, such as proper exercise and nutrition. We will discuss the role of the birth partner for pregnancy and birth.  We end the class by exploring the mind-body connection and practicing a relaxation technique.

Class 2 – Stages of Labor
Class begins by identifying the many changes a woman’s body goes through during pregnancy and in preparation for labor. We discuss the physical and emotional changes in the first stage of labor, when to travel to your birth place or call your care provider, and the normal variations in the length of labor.   We discuss the physical and emotional changes in second and third stage labor.  Basic pushing strategies and second stage positions are covered. Third stage care practices are discussed.   Couples will explore their typical responses to stress and their preferences for relaxation, coping, and calming the mind and body.   At the end of class mothers work on tuning into their own, unique breathing preferences and practice calming the body with the breath.

Class 3 – Choices for Birth
We watch the Organic Birth film and discuss the benefits and drawbacks for many of the choices couples have when planning for their birth. Topics include locations for birth, type of care provider, various pain medications, and newborn procedures.   Couples can use this information in preparing a “birth plan”.  Couples practice visualizing their ideal birth experience.

Class 4 - Fetal Positioning and Labor Positions
A review of birth choices and newborn care practices is followed by a discussion of techniques to identify, improve or maintain your baby’s position in pregnancy to facilitate an easier birth.  We practice positions and techniques to use during labor to ease discomfort and encourage fetal descent.

Class 5 - Variations in Labor and Postpartum Challenges
This class covers variations during pregnancy and labor, including cesarean surgery.  We discuss how to avoid these variations, if possible, your options if they do occur, and how to have a positive experience if medical interventions become necessary.  We discuss postpartum care for new mothers and the challenges new parents face after birth.

Class 6 - Newborn Care and Breastfeeding
This class begins with a discussion of newborn characteristics, followed by newborn procedures and the basics of newborn care.  We discuss breastfeeding, including positions, how to tell if baby is getting enough and where to go if you need help after the baby is born. We also discuss fears and emotional relaxation for birth.
